In 1998, the Office of Crash Avoidance Research determined there were 1.6 million tractor trucks and 3.6 million tractor truck trailers in use. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported on these figures on tractor trailer trucks, whose accidents are ever-increasing.

Also, in 2001, there were 7.9 million registered heavy trucks in United States, which is 4 percent of all registered vehicles, according to statistics compiled by the NHTSA.

Heavy trucks are considered those with a weight greater than 10,000 pounds. Heavy trucks are involveved in an array of traffic accidents, with this number ever increasing. They are also involved in rollovers accidents as well. Although rollover accidents are not as frequent, they can result in more damage to the vehicle and more injury to the driver.

Improving Tractor Trailer Truck Technology

Tractor-trailer trucks are involved in approximate average of 200,000 crashes annually, however, that number is quickly increasing, according to the NHTSA. In 2002 there were 435,000 large trucks involved in traffic accidents, of these accidents, nearly 4,542 involved a fatality.

Attempts are being made to improve the technology used within the tractor-trailer truck industry and with the development of commercial vehicles. Due to unavoidable constraints among current combination-unit truck trailer electrical powering and communications systems, there is becoming an increase in mechanical failures causing truck crashes.

The NHTSA has developed the Truck Multiplexing (TruckMux) project to better equip truck drivers with communications and technology between the tractor and the trailer, because truck accidents can frequently occur due to a loss of control between the two units. Other items that are also being worked on to better improve tractor-trailer trucks and thus decrease the number of accidents associated, include:

* advanced lighting multiplex modules

* trailer air brake reservoir low pressure

* brake status

* air suspension pressure and height

* tandem axle load

* rear object detection

* side object detection

* trailer door open

These are just a few of the technological issues that can cause a tractor-trailer truck accident, however, there are a plethora of reasons that a tractor-trailer truck accident can occur. For example, a study from the Large Truck Crash Causation Study from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, NHTSA and U.S Department of Transportation (DOT) discovered that there are two different categories of truck accidents: the environment and unforeseen conditions, including driver/driving conditions.

Some driver conditions include:

* traveling too fast for conditions

* driver fatigue

* aggressive driving behavior

* illness

* conversation

* alcohol, drug or prescription drug use

* interior distraction

* following too closely

* misjudgment of gap distance

Some of the environmental conditions include the following:

* roadway or weather related factors

* stop required to crash

* traffic flow interruption

* sightline obstructed

* other traffic/vehicle factors

* vehicle brake deficiency

* cargo shift or securement

* tire deficiency

* jackknife event

* brake, transmission or tire failure

* other vehicle defects

Tractor Trailer Accidents

The NHTSA has also developed a 10-year study to better determine the trends of heavy truck accidents. According to the study, the increase of truck accidents is occurring, and while many more individuals involved in accidents are wearing seatbelts/restraints, the fatalities associated with heavy truck accident/tractor trailer truck accidents is increasing. The study, conducted from 1994 to 2002, determined that:

* In 2002, there were only 523 fatal wrecks during this length of time.

* On average, 18 percent of all heavy truck accidents and fatal injuries were a result of a single vehicle rollover accident.

* There was an annual 6 percent of heavy truck accidents involving fatalities and incapacitating injuries associated with restrained drivers.

* Thirty five percent of drivers in heavy trucks were wearing restraint, such as seatbelt, which is an average.

Avoiding Harm After a Tractor Trailer Truck Accident

If involved in a tractor-trailer truck accident, it is imperative that, whether injuries are visible or not, an individual seek medical attention immediately. As some injuries may be internal, it is important to ensure all potential conditions are thoroughly reviewed by a physician. Additionally, it may be necessary for an individual to consult with a tractor-trailer truck accident attorney on the specifics of developing a truck accident lawsuit.

Often, medical bills as well as additional costs of missing work, school, etc., are associated with being involved in a tractor-trailer truck accident, which is why it may be necessary to develop truck accident litigation and pursue compensation for the injury incurred.

When most people think of cruise ships they imagine huge ocean going liners equipped with all kinds of luxuries where guests are treated to five-star service as they are journeyed around the oceans, stopping over at busy resorts to disembark for sightseeing trips and excursions.

Cruising is still a very popular activity, particularly for older generations, who in some cases may have saved for many years before making their trip of a lifetime. Cruising along the southern coast of Turkey with one of the “Blue Cruise” companies is an altogether different proposition, but for the people who join one of these cruises, they are equally special as a holiday experience.

The south coast of Turkey is rapidly growing its profile as a major European holiday destination and, as well as the larger holiday resorts like Marmaris and Bodrum, there are many beautiful bays and coves that are still inaccessible by road. Travelling by sea brings all of these places within easy reach.

The boats used on the Blue Cruises are traditional Turkish craft known as Gulets. These are wooden built boats of varying sizes that are capable of taking between 6 and 20 guests at any one time. The boats have motors for use when required but can also travel under sail for the ultimate relaxing voyage. The Gulet is skippered by a captain who is helped by a crew of deckhands, chefs and other staff, who all work to ensure passengers have a perfect holiday. Although the boats are very comfortable inside this is not the typical luxury cruise provided the bigger cruise ships. What make these trips memorable are the peaceful and beautiful locations the ships are able to visit.

It is possible to charter a whole Gulet as a private party for exclusive use, but more commonly people charter a number of cabins and share the boat with other guests. Gulets are operated by private individuals as well as cruise operators who may run a fleet of boats.

It is still possible to charter very luxurious boats and one example is the Cobra Queen, a recently built Gulet providing 5 luxurious air-conditioned cabin accommodation for up to 10 guests. The boat is operated by a dedicated crew of 5 and the level of luxury includes en-suite bathrooms with massage showers and DVD/ TV and music systems.

The term Blue Cruise refers to the colour of the crystal-clear waters in this part of the Eastern Mediterranean where spectacular bays and coves are around almost every headland. As well as anchoring up in remote secluded locations the Gulets also use the popular marinas at Antalya, Gocek, Mamaris, and Bodrum. Guests typically book flights to Turkey for arrival at an airport such as Bodrum or Dalaman before being picked up by the cruise company and transported to their boat.

A typical day on a Blue Cruise involves waking to warm sunshine and eating breakfast on deck followed by a couple of hours cruising to a new location. The Gulet will then moor or anchor for lunch and maybe a spot of swimming or just relaxing in the shade during the hottest part of the day. After packing up lunch another short cruise usually takes the boat to another secluded cove or perhaps a modern marina for a more cosmopolitan overnight stay. The bigger boats also carry a choice of watersports equipment to enjoy during the frequent stops. Windsurfers, ribs and jet skis are just some of the extras carried by larger Gulets.

The Turkish author Cevat Sakir is credited with originating the Blue Cruise concept after he was exiled to the region for inappropriate political stories. He decided to get to know the coastline by going out with local fishermen and writing about the places he had seen and the interesting history of the region. He would take visiting intellectuals on trips around the Gulf of Gokova which then became known as Blue Cruises. Sakir has been honoured with a monument based on a bronze bust of Sakir being erected in front of the castle in Bodrum.

what is the Better airline worth the money?

im going to boston from austin, DEC-28 to JAN- 2, the tickets are expensive, i am 17 so, i really don’t want to deal with sleeping in a airport because of cancellations because travel is hell at this time, and so could boston weather, northwest was one of the cheapest, so was US air, never flown on any of them, american has a lower rate to, but i had a bad experience, delta was 50 bucks more, would it be worth it?. northwest was total with taxes 355 and delta was 409, south west and jet blue do not have tickets for those dates yet, would they have better or reasonable rates. i want a good chance of getting places, at a price of no more than 400

On average, I fly 7~8 times a month, and to my experience, US airways has one of the most consistent delays and cancellations. American Airlines though, has fairly poor service, along with southwest and jetblue. Delta is a fairly mediocre airline, and people working at northwest are inexperienced.

In my opinion, your flight is fairly short haul and hardly has many delays. Go with the cheapest one.

The DARE project was the 1950’s idea of well-known linguist Frederick Cassidy, who sent field workers across the country to record obscure, regional expressions. In Maine “monkeys’ weddings” are chaotic situations. In New Jersey “cockroach killers” are pointed shoes. In North Carolina “mumble squibbles” are noogies. The first volume of DARE – “Dictionary of American Regional English, Volume 1: Introduction and A-C” – was published in 1975, with additional volumes following. After 50 years of research the final volume “S-Z”, completing 75,000 entries, will be published in 2010. Because Cassidy died in 2000, his gravestone reads, “On to Z!”

Car manufacturers are having difficult times because of the recession, but sales remain strong for the nation’s best selling car – Little Tykes Cozy Coupe. The Little Tykes factory in Hudson, Ohio runs 24-hours-a-day, turning out one molded-plastic, yellow and red, sub-subcompact every minute. The biggest design change was made in 2009 when a happy face was added to the car’s front end. While celebrating its 30th anniversary, the Cozy Coupe was inducted into the Crawford Auto-Aviation Museum in Cleveland. Considering the Little Tyke costs a very reasonable $49 and doesn’t need gas or batteries, hopefully Detroit will soon pedal cars that are as fuel efficient.

Air New Zealand developed a unique way to make certain that all travelers on their Boeing 737 domestic service flights watch the pre-takeoff, safety video. In the video the pilot and crew are wearing only body paint. Nevertheless, carefully chosen camera angles managed to provide the video with a “G” rating. The same attention-getting tactic was used in Air New Zealand’s marketing campaign for its low-priced fares. This video includes staff, as well as the chief executive officer, wearing only body paint. This must be new, light-weight packaging for a body of knowledge.

Scientists use weather satellites to track cloud cover and the sea’s surface temperature. Both are indicators of heavy rain, which can be an indicator of disease. In September 2006 Dr. Assaf Anyamba, who tracks climate data at NASA’s Goddard Earth Science Center, predicted heavy rain over east Africa. Heavy rain causes flooding, which causes the hatching of a specific type of mosquito eggs, which contain Rift Valley fever. The first case of this fever occurred in mid-December, giving authorities almost 4 months for mosquito control, public education and vaccination – which prevented an epidemic. Sometimes even scientists have to look high and low for answers.

Flying from Los Angeles to London; traveling by tube within the city of London?

This summer I will be flying from Los Angeles to visit London for the entire month of July. It’s my first time traveling alone and I have two questions….

1. What’s the best airline to go on? I heard Virgin Atlantic and Air New Zealand were good (though while I was searching around, there’s been a lot of negative reviews about Virgin Atlantic…?) If you happen to have any experiences with the two, or any other airline, I would love to hear from you. I’m mostly concerned with the quality and comfort, and I already know that the domestic airlines here aren’t that great.

2. Since i’ll be making my own transportation, the school over in London won’t be picking me up and driving me to their campus. With my luggage and backpack, i was planning on traveling by tube (less inexpensive, compared to getting a cab). Is traveling by tube a good idea?

Your helpful responses will be appreciated! =)

1) Traveling economy, all the airlines are about the same. I personally like BA.
2) You have not stated where you will be going to school so cannot help you specifically. However, I have dragged my luggage all over the underground in London and it seemed OK to me, unless you are weak and have a lot of luggage. There are a lot of stairs and you will have to carry your bags. As stated by others, it will be best if you do not arrive during the rush hour. So, landing after 10 am would be best.

Can you help me with an algebra problem please?

A plane flew 800 mi in 4 hr with the wind. It would take 5 hr to travel the same distance against the wind. What is the rate of the plane in still air and the rate of the wind?

THANK YOU SO MUCH for your help!

With wind: Distance=800, t=4hr., so rate=200mph
Against wind, Dist.=800, t=5hr., so rate =160mph

Let s = plane’s speed, and w = wind’s speed
s+w=200
s-w=160
…………..
2s=360
s=180
s+w=200, so w=200 – s, =200 -180, =20
Plane’s speed is 180 mph
Wind”s speed is 20 mph.

Check: (180+20)(4) = 800
,,,,,,,,,,,,(180-20)(5) = 800
We’re golden!
