Spring break trips come in many forms. A quick scour of the internet will uncover short 2-day weekend packages, 4-night vacations, and 7-night packages that begin the day after your last class. We have put together a list of the top 5 spring break packages based on historical data from 2002 to 2008.

Number 5 on the list is Bermuda. A great island destination year after year. Most Bermuda spring break trips found online are for 7-nights. Its a little further than most spring break destinations, so they assume you want to spend more time on the island once you arrive. Price has always been a major issue when Bermuda is offered as a spring break destination. Air/Hotel packages to Bermuda are usually very expensive. Most college spring break students mark it off the list because of the price and sometimes the duration. Many students can’t spend practically their entire spring break vacation (8-days/7-nights) at a resort across the ocean hundreds of miles away. Many have things they must do the weekend before or after their spring break week begins.

Number 4 on the list is Acapulco. This was not considered a spring break hot spot until just a few years ago (2004 to be exact). Most travel agencies did not offer an Acapulco spring break package prior to 2004 because many of the hotels there had a strict “no spring breakers” policy. This ended in 2005 when many of the hotels decided to allow students under 25 to check into their hotels during the month of March. It did, however, share the same problem that plagued most Bermuda spring break packages. The price was just too high and most packages to Acapulco were 7-nights.

Coming in 3rd is the Florida spring break destinations. I’m talking about Panama City, Myrtle Beach, and Daytona. This has been a spring break hot spot for years, well before 2002. Its cheap, you can drive there, and you don’t need a passport. One interesting trend to note is the age demographic from 2002 to 2008 in the Florida spring break destinations. It seems every year the students get younger. The 20 and up college spring break crowd has migrated to the island destinations, while the high school spring break students have moved into Florida for the past few years during spring break. I guess this is good news or bad news depending on who you are.

We are up to number two on the list. Coming in 2nd is Cancun. Yes I know you kept waiting for it and here it is at number two. The king of the spring break dominion has finally fallen into second place due to airfare prices, heavy restrictions imposed by the resorts, and a rise in crime all over Mexico in general. The hotels have seen it all and are not taking it anymore. Every year hundreds of spring break students get kicked out of their hotel room due to spring break mischief. Many also spend a night or two in the local lock up and/or fined hundreds of dollars. Crimes of theft, rape, murder, and kidnapping have been on a steady rise in Mexico since 2000. Most parents and students are aware of these facts and they are steering clear of this spring break destination as a result.

Here we are at number one and the winner is…the Bahamas. The problems that have plagued the other spring break hot spots have caused college spring break students to migrate to the Bahamas. What they found when they got there was a hidden jewel. Spring break cruises from Fort Lauderdale depart daily during March and often include hotel accommodations for 4 to 7 nights. The Bahamas consist of a series of gorgeous islands just a few miles of the coast of Florida. The parents love its proximity, the students love its price. A spring break cruise package is typically under $600 and the hotels welcome college spring break students with open arms. The only downside to this spring break destination is availability. The hotels are seeing more and more students coming to the Bahamas during the month of March and April each year. This is causing a total sell out many months prior to spring break each year. The key to getting a room at the best resorts and space aboard ship is to book a Bahamas package many months in advance.

If you’re an individual who lives in Dallas, Houston or elsewhere in Texas, and you like to travel long distances, you might want to seriously think about what that kind of travel can do to your body. Specifically sitting in a stationary position for long car ride, extended flights or train rides.

Medical professionals are concerned about the increased connection between long-haul travel and developing potentially fatal deep vein thromboses (DVT), which is the formation of blood clots in the veins. This is not a new concern. The first case was reported in 1954 in the New England Journal of Medicine, which occurred in a doctor after a 14-hour flight.

Air travel has been linked with DVT since the 1950s, with a number of plausible explanations. However, the risk of DVT might have been overlooked or underemphasized, with incidences that could happen up to several weeks after air travel. In a recent study published in British Journal of Medicine, the risk of DVT was reported to be highest within two weeks of a long-haul flight. The study concluded that the annual risk of DVT increased by 12 percent if a single long-haul flight (traveling more than 6,200 miles) is taken yearly.

The lack of mobility while traveling long distances already has been established as a contributor to DVT. There are also a number of factors travelers can experience in aircraft cabins that can increase the risk of developing DVT or pulmonary embolism (clots passing to the lungs where they may block blood flow and could result in death). These include immobility due to cramped seating positions, dehydration due to consumption of alcoholic drinks as well as tea and coffee, low humidity of the aircraft cabin, hypoxia, which is an inadequacy in the oxygen reaching the body’s tissues, and reduced barometric pressure.

The overall risk of DVT after a long-haul flight is about one in 2,000. For people with known risk factors, the risk may be higher, but for those without other risk factors, it is likely to be very low though the possibility is always there. The combination of immobility and increased risk factors could be the reason for long-haul travel DVT in some individuals, but not in all.

Recent studies show that anywhere from 6 to 20 percent of the total population is believed to have a certain degree of increased clotting tendency, or increased risk factors for developing DVT. This shows that there might be a “natural” tendency for some individuals toward DVT that’s associated with their personal factors, putting them at higher risk.

There is good news though. There are preventative measures that potentially could reduce this risk. Movement and exercise, which counteract one of the major contributing factors to DVT immobility, can help while traveling.

Physical therapists and movement experts have been guiding and providing movement interventions and exercises to prevent this potentially killer condition.

Individuals considered at risk for DVT including those:
— Over 40 years old.
— Who have already experienced blood clots.
— With a family history of blood clots.
— Who have/had cancer.
— With certain blood diseases.
— Being treated for circulation problems or heart failure.
— Recovering from recent surgery (especially hips or knees).
— With an inherited clotting tendency.
— Who are pregnant.
— Who are new mothers.
— Taking the contraceptive pill.
— On hormone replacement therapy (HRT).

While many airlines offer some onboard tips to help avoid DVT, here are other risk-reduction strategies to consider before traveling:
— Wear loose clothing.
— Find a comfortable position in your seat and recline if possible.
— Don’t cross your legs when sitting because doing so compresses blood vessels.
— At stopovers and refueling points, leave the aircraft and walk around.
— Move at regular intervals to increase blood flow through the veins.
— Walk around on long flights (when permitted).
— Drink plenty of water.
— Avoid the dehydrating effects of alcohol.
— Postpone long-haul flights for three months after hip or knee replacement surgery.
— Learn and apply in-seat exercises to ensure proper circulation.
— Wear elastic/compression stockings.
— Women taking contraceptive pills or hormone replacement therapy should perform regular exercises, as well as consider wearing elastic/compression stockings.
— Get more information from your physical therapist or gynecologist, if pregnant or nursing.
— Take current prescriptions.
— Make sure your health insurance covers you on your trip.

We’ve seen too much misinformation regarding exhaust (read: that pipe that runs under your car which gives off or “exhausts” certain things) theory.

What kind of misinformation? For starters, there are a lot of people in the “bigger is better” camp. We’re talking about exhaust pipe diameters.

Of course you’ve seen them quasi-race cars with the biggest exhaust systems making the most thundering noises while parking at your lot. For some, this is just way irritating while for others, well, they just have to put up or shut up.

So is bigger really better? To understand and to be able to take a side on this great debate, one must know what really happens and what purpose does the exhaust pipe serve.

Let’s start from the beginning. What is an exhaust system? Silly question? Not hardly. Exhaust systems carry out several important functions. First of which is getting hot, noxious exhaust gasses from your engine.

These are placed away from the engine compartment. Basically it’s the waste place of the car. It also significantly soothes noise output from the engine. And in the case of modern cars, reduce exhaust emissions.

So how the heck does the exhaust system work?

Here’s a point by point, step by step travel of the exhaust in your car. This will give you an idea on what happens inside your car (just the exhaust side, though)

After your air/fuel mixture (or nitrous/fuel mixture) burns, you will obviously have some leftovers consisting of a few unburned hydrocarbons (fuel), carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, phosphorus, and the occasional molecule of a heavy metal, such as lead or molybdenum.

These are all in gaseous form, and will be under a lot of pressure as the piston rushes them out of the cylinder and into the exhaust manifold or header It collects the exhaust gases from multiple cylinders into one pipe.

They will also be hotter. An exhaust manifold is usually made of cast iron, and its’ primary purpose is to funnel several exhaust ports into one, so you don’t need four exhaust pipes sticking out the back of your Civic.

Exhaust manifolds are usually pretty restrictive to the flow of exhaust gas. So therefore, they waste a lot of power because your pistons have to push on the exhaust gasses pretty hard to get them out.

So why does virtually every new automobile sold have exhaust manifolds? Because they are cheap to produce, and easy to install. Real cheap. Real easy.

The performance alternative to the exhaust manifold is a header. What’s the difference?

Where a manifold usually has several holes converging into a common chamber to route all your gases, a header has precisely formed tubes that curve gently to join your exhaust ports to your exhaust pipe.

How does this help? First of all, as with any fluid, exhaust gases must be treated gently for maximum horsepower production (that’s your engine’s power) You don’t want to just slam-bang exhaust gas from your engine into the exhaust system.

Nextly, exhaust gases exit from your manifold or header, travel through a bit of pipe, then end up in the catalytic converter, or “cat”. The cat’s main job is to help clean up some of the harmful chemicals from your exhaust gas so they don’t end up in your lungs.

In most cars, they also do a great job of quieting things down and giving any exhaust system a deeper, mellow tone.

From the catalytic converter, the exhaust gasses go through a bit more pipe and then into a muffler, or system consisting of several mufflers and/or resonators.

Exhaust gases leave the engine under extremely high pressure. If we allowed exhaust gasses escape to the atmosphere directly from the exhaust port, you can well imagine how loud and cop-attracting the noise would be.

For the same reason gunshots are loud, engine exhaust is loud. Sure, it might be cool to drive around on the street with that testosterone producing, chest-thumping, 150 decibel roar coming from your car… for about 5.3 seconds. Even the gentleman’s gentleman has got to use a muffler, or system of mufflers, on their exhaust.
