Airline travel today is a lot different than it used to be, with new rules and regulations, as well as security alerts and procedures. For parents who are traveling with small children, air travel can be a nightmare if you are not careful. Not too long ago, Delta asked a mother to leave the plane because she was a mother and she was breast feeding her infant child. That was the woman’s only crime but she was forced off the plane by Delta authorities because another passenger thought that a natural beautiful bond between parent and child was obscene. Apparently Delta agreed with the passenger who complained, because the mother was not allowed to take the flight.
In the current world today, parents can no longer depend on airline personnel to use common sense, because apparently some people just do not have any. If you are traveling with small children, there are some tips to follow to try and make your airline travel as hassle free as possible. There are rules and regulations concerning what is allowed in your carry on luggage, and the limit for liquids is two ounces. For formula and expressed breast milk, this limit does not apply and you can carry enough of these in your carry on bag to last for the duration of the flight. The breast milk or formula must be kept separate from the other carry on liquids, and you must declare to security personnel what the liquid is and why it is needed. The exception only applies to the maximum amount that could be needed for your travel, so you could not take four gallons of formula or expressed breast milk for a two hour flight.
For parents who have small children who still use diapers, most airport bathrooms have changing stations, and you may bring diapers as well as wipes, small bottles of lotion and baby oil, and any other necessary supplies. Just make sure that the bottles are two ounces or less, not bigger bottles that are half empty. If your child is a toddler, it is also a good idea to bring books and toys to amuse them. Ever since 9/11, security checkpoints are slow, and passengers must be at the airport hours early, so make sure that you have something to keep your child amused and happy.
I am going alone to visit my parents. My 20 month old has flown before, but my husband and in-laws were with. I have packed a number of special toys, a video IPOD and snacks. What I would love are specific things that have worked for you. He is super busy!! What would not be appreciated are suggestions not to fly (not an option) or use Benedryl (he reacts)
Bring along new items that he has never seem before. I have taken toy cars (Hot Wheels) , playdoh, & coloring books. Make a trip to the Dollar tree before you go and stock up on small items you think he would like. A good friend of mine is traveling to Australia next month from the eastern US with two toddlers and a newborn. Imagine that. Hopefully your trip is not nearly as long! Good luck.
Shelly Rivoli – Tips to help protect baby from cold & flu during travel
Pregnant mothers are advised to travel in the second trimester of their pregnancies. Traveling within 12 – 16 weeks is safer and more comfortable as the risk of miscarriage is reduced. Also, within that period, most pregnant mothers no longer experience the effects of morning sickness. When your pregnancy has reached 28 weeks, you may feel uncomfortable to travel long distance because of the size of your stomach.
Regardless of the stage of your pregnancy, you should always consult your doctor for specific guidelines for your traveling trips either by car, train, or plane. Here are several useful and essential travel guidelines which many pregnant mothers have benefited from.
General Travel Guidelines:
Start your journey when you are well rested
Travel as light as possible
Use suitcases with wheels
Wear comfortable shoes and clothing
Bring along water and fruit juices and drink at least a glass every hour
Bring along high fiber and nutritious snacks
Bring along supplements, vitamins and medication that you need
Bring along your doctor’s contact details.
If possible, travel with your spouse, a friend or a relative
Traveling by Air:
No reports have shown that commercial air travel could harm the health of your growing baby.
Here are some guidelines when traveling on air:
Request for an aisle seat so that you can move freely throughout the cabin.
Avoid drinking tea and coffee as these will cause fluid retention.
Move around the cabin frequently to ensure smooth circulation of the blood.
Stretch your legs a few times every hour to avoid muscle cramps and numbness.
In order to position your seatbelt, sit as upright as you can. Place the lap belt under your belly as
low as possible.
Traveling by Car:
One of the most important guides when traveling by car is to fasten your seatbelt. In this way, you baby is well cushioned by your body. This safety precaution will not harm your baby. In order to position your seatbelt, sit as upright as you can. Place the lap belt under your belly as low as possible. The shoulder belt should cross your chest between your breasts.
Other important guidelines when traveling by car:
Wear you seatbelt firmly.
Bring along water and drink frequently.
Plan frequent stops in order for you to visit the bathroom.
Avoid carbonated drinks and high-fat snacks or food at car stops.
Lastly, do enjoy yourself when traveling. If you are expecting your first child, you should really enjoy the opportunity to travel with ease, at least for a couple of month without having to take along any baby toys, bottles, diapers and so on. With ample preparation and the above traveling guidelines to safeguard yourself from any traveling stress, you are sure to have an exciting and relaxing trip.

Suppose you were appointed head of a corporation and one of your tasks was to appoint a director of safety and security who was DIRECTLY responsible for the welfare and safety of MILLIONS of employees.
Lets say after you got this job almost a year later you had still not appointed said director I would consider this very inept and derelict of your duty would you not.
Why is it then that there is not yet a director for the NTA the agency responsible for security and safety for air travel in the US????
Janet Napolitano has had almost a year to appoint a director (after Barry fired the last one a Bush appointee upon taking office) I guess the public doesn’t count much to this public servant since she can’t even get a job done in almost a year.
Yet another inept Obama lackey what say you.
Hey maybe a director would have not let the security guidelines get leaked out to our enemies just a thought.
As inept our President is do you really expect those under him too show him up?
Hopefully with his main aim of destroying the 1st World’s economy he will stay incompetent.

TSA says you can bring “saline solution” in carry-on…?
does this also apply to “contact solution”?
see following (obtained from tsa.gov website):
“To ensure the health and welfare of certain air travelers there are no limits on the amounts of the following liquids, gels and aerosols you may carry through a security checkpoint:
Baby formula and breast milk if a baby or small child is traveling;
All prescription and over-the-counter medications (liquids, gels, and aerosols) including KY jelly, eye drops, and saline solution for medical purposes;…”
note that it says “NO LIMITS ON THE AMOUNTS OF…”
When I flew last month, they did not count my saline solution as part of the liquids that could fit in the clear quart bag. I took both daily cleaner and a 4oz bottle of saline, and they were both fine because they were for contact lenses. The things listed above as “allowable” liquids are not required to be in your clear 1 quart bag. (Try fitting a baby bottle with formula in there!)
