The first key to minimizing jet lag is to drink water continuously through your travel process. Dehydration can intensify some of the symptoms of jet lag and you’ll end up more out of sync. Bring your own water on the plane, and drink lots of water once you arrive at your destination. You’ll be happy you did.

Try to sleep on the plane so you’ll offset the time change by at least a few hours. Take noise canceling earphones with you so you can block out the noise of the plan and get some rest. If at all possible, try to catch a red eye flight so you’ll be able to get to sleep naturally. However, you should avoid taking sleeping pills in an attempt to get some rest. Drugs could make your jet lag even worse.

Once you get to your destination, try to stay awake until the nighttime in that location. Use a trip to the coffee house to perk up your senses and then get out and do something. Some sight seeing and light walks around your new location will help your body adjust to the time change. You’ll be able to fall asleep when night falls if you get some exercise. Although it may be hard to stay up on arrival day, you’ll be glad you did when you wake up the next morning refreshed and ready to seize the day.

On your arrival day, you should also eat some small meals throughout the day to break up your previous eating routine. The next day, you can start eating according to the time zone’s schedule more quickly and easily. It’s important that you follow this advice so you don’t find yourself ravenous at 2 am in your new time.

Make sure to give yourself time to adjust to the changes. Plan your busy days at your new location for at least two days into your trip. Your arrival day and your first full day there should be spent doing some low-key activities. Don’t plan your major business meetings or intense sight seeing for those days, or you’ll end up regretting it later.

Jet lag doesn’t have to be a problem if you follow these simple tips. Many people avoid traveling because they had a bad experience with jet lag in the past. Get on the offensive with this condition and you’ll minimize the impact that it has on your trip.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has said that while purchasing travel insurance may be viewed as an additional expense for those planning already expensive holidays, taking out adequate protection is an essential course of action for those booking a trip away.

According to Sean Tipton, press officer at the organisation, travelling abroad either on business or pleasure without first taking out insurance would be “extremely foolish”. He added that the risks associated with travel would be magnified for those who planned to take adventurous breaks.

For those who are already struggling with the costs of travel, Mr Tipton asserted that while a saving of 30 or 40 pounds could be made, uninsured travellers could end up being forced to sell their house to cover the costs of medical expenses in the event of an accident. Consumers eager to ensure that they travel in safety may wish to consider taking out a personal loan to meet the full costs of taking a dream holiday while protecting against nightmare scenarios.

“The worst case scenario is that if you broke your leg skiing in America and you didn’t have insurance then you would be talking about a bill for tens of thousands of dollars. If it was a very bad break then they might decide that you should be flown back to the UK in an air ambulance and then you’re getting into a hundred thousand potentially. [If you didn't take out insurance] you would save 30 or 40 pounds for an insurance policy but you run the risk of having to sell your house to pay the bill and travelling uninsured is just a very foolish thing to do to,” Mr Tipton explained.

Research by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office has shown that travellers from both younger and older generations are choosing to take adventure holidays. Statistics from the government body suggest that 17 per cent of 18 to 35-year-olds took a jet-skiing holiday and 14 per cent chose to go rock climbing or mountaineering at the last minute. Meanwhile, it was also reported that 20 per cent of over-55s took risks on holiday that they would not consider at home. Furthermore, the office revealed that 65 per cent of people in this age bracket travelled without travel insurance protection. It was also shown that older generations who did take out cover while travelling were three times more likely to make a claim than younger age groups. Average insurance costs for the older age bracket were said to be around three and a half times more expensive than the usual policy for someone aged 18 to 24.

Have you taken a “packaged vacation to Maui”?

And if so where did you stay/ Did you like it? What is included…flight, hotel, etc??? How do you get from air port to hotel and back again when you check out…is that included in you final cost?? We have NEVER taken a packaged vacation and need specifics. I asked a question Sat on Hawaii and it was most helpful on which island to stay at…now I need more info from people who have taken a ‘packaged’ trip. I have looked at .com travel sites, but still need help. Thanks in advance.

Maui is beautiful and you will love it! We have gone quite a few times and have always stayed in the town of Wailea. We have stayed at the Fairmont Key lani, the Four Seasons and on our honeymoon we stayed at the Grand Wailea. Lots of fun!! If you have kids, this is a great place. The pool is amazing. Even on our honeymoon, we felt like kids in the pool. It was simply Heaven!

Rent a car in Maui. It is the only way to really see the island and get around. Otherwise, you will spend a fortune on taxis! You can even pick up the car at the airport. It’s such a cinch!

On package deals, depending on which one, usually it is all taxes, hotel and flight. In my opinion, don’t ever do an all-inclusive. If you do this, you will miss out on so many fabulous restaurants.
